Roy Harvender Jr, 59, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for sharing pictures and videos of child sex abuse on the dark web.
Although Harvender was using the anonymizing Tor network, he was tricked into clicking on a video planted by the police that took him to a non-Tor network where his IP address was visible. That led police straight to Harvenders door.
Harvender, along with 105,651 registered users, was a member of a dark website called Website 19. One of the conditions of membership was that users had to provide fresh child pornography in order to maintain their access.
A member of Website 19 was arrested in June 2014, according to the FBI, and his credentials were used to identify the location of the server hosting the website. Police seized the server and arrested the operator who co-operated.
The agents used their newly found administrator privileges on those boxes to infect visiting web browsers with NIT trackers: this spyware was designed to unmask people hiding behind Tor.
In addition to the 13 year prison term, he will be subject to 10 years probation and ordered to pay $5,000 to each of his victims, if they can be found.
