Another company falls victim to hackers stealing employees W-2 data.
Three thousand workers at Boise, Idaho-based Amalgamated Sugar are in danger of fraud resulting from a hacker fooling an employee in the corporate office who sent out the information.
It is a typical scenario where the employee received a request from the CEO to send him the W-2 data. The phishing email appeared to be legitimate and had the email address which appeared to come from the CEO. The employee complied without checking.
The company is investigating the incident and have contacted law enforcement. Further information will be release as it becomes available. However, the company is cautioning its employees to place a fraud alert on credit files and notify the major credit bureaus so they would receive an alert should anyone attempt to open a new account in their name or change an existing account.
However, most likely the criminals will use the data to file fraudulent tax returns.
The company made the usual statement: “We greatly regret this breach has occurred."
