The statistics on phone theft are staggering. According to Lookout, 3.1 million Americans in 2013 had their smartphone stolen.
According to Lookout's recently released Phone Theft in America report. A majority of people said they would put themselves in harm's way to find a stolen smartphone.
"The reality is that whether your smartphone is white, black, or gold, it is now almost 30 times more valuable per ounce than a block of solid silver—and almost as easy to convert discreetly into cash," the Lookout report said.
45 percent of reported thefts were the outcome of the owner absentmindedly forgetting their phone in a public place. Only 11 percent were plucked from a person's hands, pocket, purse, or bag.
