Police make arrest for March DDoS attack

Spanish authorities have arrested a Dutch man in conjunction with the large scale DDoS attack against the spam-fighting organization called the Spamhaus Project which occurred in late March.

The man only identified as 'SK' by the National Office of the Public Ministry, was arrested in Barcelona, Spain, and will be transferred to the Netherlands shortly to face the charges against him.

The press release states that 'SK' is suspected of unprecedented heavy attacks on the non-profit organization Spamhaus, where anti-spam databases are managed. Thess so-called DDoS attacks last month were also partners of the United States, Spamhaus in Netherlands and Great Britain. The attackers were using forged IP addresses.

As part of the ongoing investigation multiple computers, cell phones, and data carriers were seized from the Barcelona residence of 'SK'.

The police investigation was carried out by the Netherlands High Tech Crime Team, and the arrest in Spain was made possible through Eurojust, a cooperation between judicial authorities within the European Union.

PCWorld says that according to a source familiar with the investigation, the man arrested is Sven Kamphuis, who acted as a spokesman for the Stophaus Movement following the attack in March. However, at the time, Kamphuis denied his personal involvement in the attack and said that it was launched by Stophaus members from China and Russia.

Authorities have made no official confirmation that Sven Kamphuis is the 'SK' that is currently in custody.
