A New York City-based private investigator, Eric Saldarriaga, was sentenced to three months in jail for hiring a hacker.
The FBI wrote in a press release, that Saldarriaga hired the hackers to access the email accounts of nearly 50 victims. In one case, he attempted to gain access to multiple email accounts for a specific individual.
The accounts he wanted hacked were people he was investigating or people he was personally interested in.
After paying the hacking service, Saldarriaga was given the log in credentials allowing him to unlawfully access those email accounts.
Saldarriaga also received three years of supervised release and was ordered to forfeit $5,000 and pay a $1,000 fine.
He pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit computer hacking.
