Protecting yourself on Facebook

The Washington Post has an article up discussing the recent Facebook spam, how it happened and how to avoid it:

“Many Facebook users were surprised to find graphic pornographic and violent images in their news feeds this week, following a widespread spam attack. The company said that it now has the issue under control.

The company cited a “browser vulnerability” that allowed hackers to post the images to users accounts. Judging from Facebook’s statement, however, the heart of the problem is that people were somehow tricked into copying and pasting a line of malicious code into their browser bars.”

We can save you some trouble here by giving the same advice we have given for years. The The Washington Post article only offers a few suggestions as well.

Slow down and look at links before you click them. Better yet, don't click them at all. Be careful what applications you allow. It's really that simple. Finally, the old saying "if it's too good to be true, it probably is" holds up here. Do you know anyone who has actually won an iPad on Facebook? Probably not.
