Ransom Free Helps Stop the Petya Ransomware

Posted by: Jon Ben-Mayor on 07/11/2017 06:11 AM [ comments Comments ]

Ransom Free can stop the Petya ransomware from spreading within a network by blocking the file C:Windowsperfc.dat

There are a few ways to avoid Petya ransomware. If you get a check disk error, shut off your computer immediately and restore from backup. Microsoft and most antivirus companies have patched against this so you should have Windows Updates and your antivirus running and up to date. Finally, the one thing we have repeated here at MajorGeeks since day 1 - backup, backup, backup. We use Acronis True Image. You can create a complete image of your drive or do daily snapshots.

In other words, most of you reading this don't need this tool, but it does have a purpose.

Administrators can stop Petya from spreading within a network by blocking the file C:Windowsperfc.dat from running. You can do this from the Windows Management Instrumentation, but if you don't know how, Ransom Free can do this for you.

Ransom Free is portable, free and only takes a few seconds to run. It's certainly a niche tool that's not needed by most, with a specific purpose, as explained above.
