Ransomware by the Numbers

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 05/31/2016 10:36 AM [ comments Comments ]

Statistics from US cyber-security firm Fortinet list the numbers of frequency between April 1st and May 15th in this order:

CryptoWall (41.04%), Locky (34.36%), Cerber (24.17%), TorrentLocker (0.24%), and TeslaCrypt (0.09%).

Just a month previous, the numbers showed CryptoWall, TeslaCrypt, and Locky as the top three.

TeslaCrypt fell out of contention when the creators of the ransomware threw in the towel and revealed the decryption key.

Cerber showed up at the beginning of the year and stands out because it is the only ransomware that reads you the ransom notice.

The huge uptick in Locky corresponds to a massive spam campaign.
