Researchers Hack Jeep (Video)

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 07/24/2015 04:43 AM [ comments Comments ]

Is your car hackable? Two researchers hacked a Chrysler Jeep Cherokee.

Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek demonstrated that they could hack the Jeep.

First they remotely turned on the air conditioning. Then they turned on the stereo. Next they turned on the windshield wipers and blasted the windshield with fluid.

But that was only the beginning. They then hacked the transmission making the accelerator to stop working. As a final coup, they disconnected the brakes. The car ended up in a ditch.

The issue apparently lies in a wireless service called Uconnect which connects these cars to the Sprint cellphone network. The researchers only had to find a vulnerability – which they did – to access and control the car’s system. Anyone who knows the IP address can gain access to it.

Chrysler has issued a patch which should be applied asap.

You can watch the hack in progress:
