High-end fashion retailer Vera Bradley has been alerting customers that its Point-of-Sale system was compromised between July 25 and Sept. 23.
The breach affected retail customers who shopped at any of the 159 outlets but did not affect online shoppers. It's unknown how many customers were affected, but there have been no reports of suspected fraudulent bank card activity.
The company made a statement about the malware on its system: “The program was specifically designed to find track data in the magnetic stripe of a payment card that may contain the card number, cardholder name, expiration date, and internal verification code as the data was being routed through the affected payment systems.”
The malware collected only credit card data and did not affect other information such as account usernames and passwords, birth dates and Social Security numbers.
Vera Bradley joins a long list of retail chains that have been victimized by POS malware. Chains such as Wendy's, The Hard Rock Hotel and Noodles and Company. Others included Eddie Bauer, Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, HEI Hotels and Resorts and Oracle.
