Last week we mentioned a Perfect Popcorn app and were surprised it existed and had a 4.5 star rating. We said we had to try it and I did.

I’ll admit it gets point for cuteness. Odds are the kids will love it. You simply tell it you’re ready to pop, choose the size bag (small or snack size), set the microphone towards the microwave and let it go. It did detect the popping and seemed to ignore any background noises I made, which was a surprise and the animations are adorable.
Sadly, this is where the apps functionality ends. We recently put a new Samsung microwave in and it has been popping our popcorn to perfection. This app, however disagreed. It wanted me to run the popcorn for an additional 33 seconds. I knew I was in trouble because I typically run it an extra 20-30 seconds because I like a little burn in mine. Sure enough I opened the microwave to some extra smoke and I knew it was burned a little by the smell. As you can see in the photo below it was burned to perfection for me. Too bad the app said it was perfectly popped. Not even close.
The app, as mentioned, is cute and fun, but if you need to burn your popcorn for you or your kids to see the final animation then it is an outright failure. Not sure how the 4.5 ratings get this to a 4.5 but I would call it a 2 at best since it essentially fails at the main task.
Maybe my new Samsung Microwave is too good?
You can see the original post with screenshots and description at this page or download it directly from iTunes. Android version not yet available but be glad.
