Russia’s Central Bank was hit by hackers who stole an estimated $45 million from customer’s accounts.
According to Reuters, the bank has managed to recoup $26 million so far.
Somehow the criminals obtained customer credentials and after pilfering the funds, they sent the proceeds to foreign banks.
The bank is tracking the funds and it is now sure if any of the remaining loot will be reclaimed.
The attack is similar to the theft from Bangladesh Central bank last year when thieves tried to steal 1 billion and managed to acquire $81 million. Most of the stolen money was sent to casinos in the Philippines.
The report comes on the heels of a report issued by the FSB (Federal Security Service) that warns of an attempt by criminals to try to destabilize Russia's banking sector with rumors of a fake crisis, fake news about bank failures, SMS alerts, and cyber-attacks.
