Cybersecurity firm Group-IB is reporting that Russian authorities have arrested a group of 16 hacker who managed to steal $800,000 from banking victims.
The gang, which called itself Cron, scammed victims into downloading malware via bogus banking applications or lured them to infected websites that housed banking Trojans. Once on a victims device, the malware would then steal money from the victims accounts and transfer it to one of 6,000 bank accounts controlled by the hackers.
The group is estimated to have infected one million smartphones and, for a year, continued to infect devices at a rate of 3,500 devices a day.
Before they were arrested, the group was adjusting their malware to carry out attacks in Great Britain, Germany, France, US, Turkey, Singapore, Australia, and other regions around the world.
Group-IB teamed up with Russian authorities to track down, identify and arrest the group.
