After a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in the 2014/2015 school year, Rutgers University has hired three cybersecurity firms to firm up the school's cyber defenses.
The university has hired Fishnet Security, Level 3 Communications and Imperva to analyze security, monitor servers, prevent attacks, scan for malware and provide other classified services. The cost is expected to run between $2 and $3 million per year. ( It resulted in a tuition increase. )
A Rutgers spokesperson said: "We are increasing the resources dedicated to protecting and improving the security of university data and electronic environments.”
Earlier this year Rutgers asked the FBI to investigate cyberattacks that shut down internet and forced teachers to cancel classes.
Educational institutions have increasingly come under attack from hackers.
