Samsung files for ebook page turning patent

Apple already has a patent on the faux page curl in iBooks and now Samsung want's one as well. No one is actually saying Apple invented page turning. I really don’t know who was the first to have animated page turning but I am sure it must have been used in cartoons and animations way before there was an Apple or Samsung.

You can see the patent application at the USPTO website.

As The Digital Reader points out Samsung is going beyond the simple page flipping and wants to even cover the physics of how a page might turn including page crumpling as seen below. The patent goes on to describe a number of different on screen gestures that you might use to trigger a page turn including dragging from a corner, sliding a finger down the side of the screen, and swiping from the edge to the center of the screen.

I am sure it will be pretty cute but as someone who does all his reading on his iPhone I can say I just want the page to turn - period. If I want a page to crumple, I will buy a real book, in other words – never.

Time will tell but I am betting there is enough detail here to get the patent.

What's next, a patent on how you chew?
