Trick-or-treating during polar bear season is not a wise endeavor. The Canadian Hamlet of Arviat, Nunavut on the western shore of Hudson Bay agrees, and has decided that having 1200 children running about at this time is not a good idea. The bears are especially active during the fall freeze up - and having colorfully dressed little hors d'oeuvres scurrying around might be enough to pique the interest of a hungry bear.
The hamlet decided to move all otherwise outdoor Halloween festivities inside of City Hall. According to CBC News, Steve England, the Hamlet's SAO, says, a majority of Arviat residents support the idea.
"Picture 1,200 kids going door to door in Arviat in the middle of polar bear season," he said.
"It's a pretty obvious conclusion of what tragedies could come out of that. We're just trying to safeguard the younger population by offering an alternative.
It is so potentially dangerous - that the Hamlet will be busing kids to the City Hall festivities! This makes perfect sense since the wee ones are like moving meals with dessert included.
