School District Loses Thumb Drive; Employee Data at Risk

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 05/24/2016 06:19 AM [ comments Comments ]

Someone lost the thumb drive from the San Mateo Foster City School District (SMFCSD) which contained the full names, addresses, and social security numbers of its employees.

There was no financial information on the drive. The drive was lost on April 6 and a comprehensive search has not turned up the drive. Officials were just now informed.

No fraudulent activity has been reported but the district is offering a years’ worth of free identity protection services.

A school official, unnamed, said: “Please accept my sincere apologies on behalf of the San Mateo Foster City School District, that this incident occurred. We are committed to maintaining the privacy of your information and have taken many precautions to help safeguard it.”

San Mateo was not the only school that was compromised. The City College of San Francisco (CCSF) was also breached by a phishing scam that came in an email that an employee opened. The email was disguised as a legitimate request for student information. Again what was compromised may have included names, addresses, social security numbers and other information contained in financial aid applications.
