Unauthorized access to the Scottrade network was gained for several months between late 2013 and early 2014 and personal information may have been compromised.
The incident may have affected anyone who had a Scottrade account prior to February 2014 which could have affected 4.6 million customers.
A notification said: "We have no reason to believe that Scottrade's trading platforms or any client funds were compromised. Based upon our internal investigation and information provided by the federal authorities, we believe a list of client names and street addresses was taken from our system.”
The affected system contained Social Security numbers, email addresses and other data but the company said it did not think that info was targeted. Client passwords were encrypted at all times and were not believed to have been affected.
The company is notifying clients and offering a year of identity protection services.
