Silent Mail email service, founded by Silent Circle, has decided to shut down. The decision, announced in a blog post, comes on the same day that Lavabit, another secure email service, decided to close because it cannot guarantee users' security.
Silent Circle has not received any âsubpoenas, warrants, security letters, or anything else by any governmentâ. By acting now the post says Silent Circle and users can avoid dealing with them in the future.
The post mentions Lavabit (the email service that whistleblower Edward Snowden used ) and its unwillingness to âbe complicit in crimes against the American peopleâ and says Silent Circle can âsee the writing the wallâ and has therefore âdecided that it is best for us to shut down Silent Mail now.â
Silent Circle says it is still working on âinnovative ways to do truly secure communicationsâ.
