Asus plans on releasing smaller Windows 8 tablet in order to help Microsoft lower the cost and size of mobile devices running its operating system.
While speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Asus' CEO, Jerry Shen said "We're very optimistic about sales for Windows 8 tablets this year," because in the past Windows has not made much headway against Android, and iOS due to in part, pricing, and size. He follows that up with; "that could change this year, with prices for Windows 8 tablets likely to fall below $300."
The Verge points out that most Windows 8 tablets are priced around $400 to $500, with displays of about 10-inches, so a cheaper option would give Windows a chance to compete more directly with the likes of Apple's iPad Mini and Google's Nexus 7.
Mr. Shen also noted that previous restriction of Windows 8 to larger tablets was one reason they cost hundreds of dollars more than their Android counterparts. But with Microsoft's new push toward smaller devices, Windows 8 tablets this year could cost just $50 more than the Android counterpart.
