CEO Elon Musk, the founder of Space X, said they are working on a network of micro-satellites that will be used to provide Internet access.
Musk wrote on Monday: “SpaceX is still in the early stages of developing advanced micro-satellites operating in large formations. Announcement in 2 to 3 months.”
The remarks were in response to a Twitter comment asking if the project would be “about free and unfettered Internet access for the masses.” Musk responded that the satellites would be “unfettered certainly and at very low cost.”
Musk along with Greg Wyler, the founder of satellite company O3b networks, are hoping to launch some 700 compact, low-cost satellites to deliver Internet access around the world.
Space X is not the only one planning on launching satellites. Google is planning on building a satellite network to bring remote parts of the world online. They are also working on test with balloons to provide service. Called Project Loon, they are testing balloons in the Nevada desert.
