A hacker, also known to have hacked the Dota 2 forum, has breached the Steam platform and made off with around 3.3 million unique registered users.
A known vulnerability in the vBulletin software was thought to be the access to the breach.
The stolen data included full names, usernames, scrambled passwords, email addresses, dates of birth, join dates, avatars, Steam usernames, and user activity data. The passwords were stored with the MD5 algorithm which is considered weak and it is thought that roughly 84% of them have been decrypted.
The stolen database also included about 9.1 million Steam keys. Some of which have already been redeemed.
A spokesman for the site, Dirk Hassinger, has denied that the site was hacked: "We checked our server log files and did not find any unusual activity within the past four weeks."
