Wow. Just wow. And they say PC gaming is dead. I guess that's how we start this story, with our initial reaction. Steam would disagree by hitting a record 17,683,804 online and 6,813,617 playing.
Digital Trends says that it was boosted by a popular game called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Currently, that game has 3 million users, more than double the players of number two Dota 2 at 1.2 million users.
In PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, your goal is to be the last one standing unless you play in peace. Every match opens with 100 players jumping out of a cargo plane onto a giant, abandoned island with nothing but the shirts on their backs. As soon as you hit the ground, it’s a mad dash to find weapons and outlive everyone else.
Last we heard Steam had 75 million users and claimed 125 million “active” accounts, although those reports were from 2014 and 2015.
We've used Steam since it was released in 2003, so we know a bit about it. Steam is a great way to buy games and always easily have them archived. No need to backup, no need to write down keys, just play. Free and indie games are also available. It's not a perfect service, nothing is, but if you're a gamer, you have Steam.
If you've never tried it and like games, you can download Steam from Majorgeeks.
