Who writes ransomware? Japanese police have arrested a 14-year-old boy for creating ransomware and uploading the code to the internet.
According to Japanese media, the teen created the ransomware on January 5th and uploaded it the same day. He told police that he learned coding on his own and assembled the ransomware from various parts that he found online.
The boy never tried to distribute it via phishing scams or exploit kits, but only uploaded it to social media sites and added the tag "I made ransomware. Please feel free to use it."
He said he only did it to increase his name recognition. Authorities, who practice "cyberpatrolling" of the internet, found the ransomware project in January. They traced it back to the teen, searched his home and confiscated his computer.
Although approximately 100 people downloaded the ransomware, police have not discovered any financial compromises as a result.
