Andrew Otto Boggs, 23, of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, was found guilty of hacking several three-letter US agencies including the CIA, DHS, DOJ, and FBI.
Boggs was part of a hacking group known as Crackas With Attitude (CWA), which operated between late 2015 and early 2016. They were responsible for hacking many government agencies and dumping sensitive data on the internet.
Their claim to fame came when they hacked the personal AOL account of then CIA boss John Brennan. After that, they went on to hack personal or work email accounts for FBI Deputy Director Mark Giuliano, US National Intelligence Director James Clapper, and President Barack Obama’s Senior Advisor on science and technology John Holdren.
Among the data dumped on the internet included details of 2,400 US government officials, 80 Miami police officers, 9,000 DHS employees, and 20,000 FBI staffers.
There mistake came when they dumped the data online via the CryptoBin service. Authorities seized the server and started tracking down the group.
Most of the members of the group were teenagers. First to be arrested was Derp, a 16-year-old teen. Next came the group’s leader, another 16-year-old UK teen known as Cracka. Within a week, a third member was arrested, a Scottish 15-year-old who was known online as Cubed.
The group is alleged to have caused damages in excess of $1.5 million.
