Italian police are investigating whether the attack on cyber-espionage firm Hacking Team could have been an inside job.
Data leaked on the internet exposed the workings of the Hacking Team dealings with repressive regimes and flaws in user software.
Reuters was told by investigative sources that they were considering the possibility that six former employees could be responsible for the attack on the company.
The Hacking Team chief executive, David Vincenzetti, has previously said a government might have been behind the hacking of the company’s systems.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation was one of the Hacking Teams customers as it made software which enabled the bureau to hack into and spy on the smartphones and computers of suspects.
One surprising outcome of the data leaked is that the Hacking Team had developed software that would allow the hacking of companies, governments and individuals via wifi carried into range by a drone.
