Is it better to incarcerate teen hackers or treat them like addicts?
A study recently conducted for Europol is suggesting that treating cybercrime like an addiction similar to programs for treating substance abuse and smoking.
According to the BBC, a study found that levels of dopamine hormones may increase as teenagers derive pleasures from the taboo nature of hacking. Compulsive and impulsive behavior need further study as to its addictive tendencies.
The study also suggests that there might be benefit from spending time with role models such as ex-hackers and learning how their actions affect others.
Researchers are also recommending that educators get involved and recognize students with technological skills who can be mentored with nurturing and rewards for using their talents to help others rather than turn to hacking.
