The year in review offers up the seven most noted hacks of 2016.
1) The Hack of the DNC. Although there is still controversy about the hackers behind the hack of the DNC, it seems clear that the revelation of emails were intended to hurt the campaign of Hillary Clinton. Russia was trying to influence the election in favor of Republican Donald Trump.
2) The massive DDoS attack against DNS service Dyn. This massive attack wreaked havoc on the internet. Dyn services such sites as Amazon, Etsy, GitHub, Shopify, and Twitter. Users just trying to access those sites just compounded the situation.
3) The Panama Papers. This hack is noteworthy in its size. Stolen from the legal offices of Mossack Fonesca were 2.6 TB of data. Included in the data were details about how 70 past and current world political figures hid income from revenue officials.
4) The Yahoo Hack. First reported as a thief of 500,000 users information, it was breached a second time and is estimated to have impacted 1 billion users.
5) The NSA Hack. A shadow group called the Shadow Brokers stole tools from the Equation Group. Although the tools were old and created for specific targets, the breach may have been a way for Russia to embarrass the NSA.
6) $65 million bitcoin hack. The trading group called Bitfinex saw a breach the netted the hackers 120,000 bitcoin. The company was thought to be hack proof with two factor authorization. One factor was held by Bitfinex while the other factor was held by its security partner BitGo.
7) Ransomware v. healthcare. The hacks against the healthcare industry shows how easily they were compromised and how lucrative the targets are. Ransomware as a service is cropping up in the internet underworld, making it a threat to consumers as well as giant corporations.
