Chinese authorities have arrested a 20-year-old man named Chen from Wuhu and a 13-year-old boy named Jinmou from the city of Anyang.
The two are charged with distributing a version of the SLocker Android ransomware that was customized to look like WannaCry.
Once the malware hit the web, police authorities, along with the help of Qihoo 360 and Tencent Security Lab, arrested the two just five days later.
The malware was being distributed as a plugin for a popular game in China called King of Glory. Less than 100 victims were duped because the pair didn't have the experience necessary for mass distribution.
The ransom demand was only 40 Chinese Renminbi ($6) and instructions were to send the ill-gotten gains via Chinese payment providers QQ, Alipay, or WeChat. The payments left a trail for authorities to track.
Police seized phones and electronic devices from the duo and found 34 pieces of malware on the devices. The arrests came less than a week after they started the ransomware campaign because of the amateurish way they handled payments.
