Thirteen Year Prison Sentence in Hacking Scheme

According to an FBI release, Hiey Minh Ngo, a Vietnamese man was sentenced to 13 years in jail for stealing and selling the personally identifiable information (PII) of more than 200 million people.
Ngo was convicted of hacking into U.S. company databases to steal information then trying to sell it on online marketplaces to other cybercriminals. The venture earned him as much as $2 million.
The IRS reported $65 million of fraudulent tax returns filed on behalf of 13,673 U.S. citizens whose information was stolen by Ngo. He was facing 24 years in prison but by co-operating with authorities, the sentence was reduced. His co-operation resulted in the arrest of more than a dozen of his former clients.
