Nikhil Nilesh Shah, 33, of Union, N.J., pleads guilty to sabotaging his former employers’ servers.
The Dept. of Justice announced that Shah will spend 30 months in prison and will be required to forfeit $324,462 in restitution. According to the DOJ, the malicious code he sent to Smart Online's servers deleted much of the company's intellectual property and caused at least $5,000 in damages.
His plea was one of guilty for causing the transmission of computer code. He previously admitted to cyberattacking mobile application platform developer Smart Online Inc. in June 2012.
U.S. District Judge Louise Flanagan of the Eastern District of North Carolina presided over the trial.
Shah was formerly employed as an information technology manager for Smart Online Inc.
