It is amazing to that in this day and age of social media that every musician isn’t all over it and taking advantage of it. Back in the 80’s you had to pound the pavement and hang flyers, kiss butt and do whatever it took. Today, a no talent like Justin Bieber can get signed off of YouTube.
Today, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich have removed their music from streaming services such as Spotify and Rdio, saying that "it's bad for new music."
"We're off of Spotify," Godrich began. "Someone gotta say something. It's bad for new music.
"The music industry is being taken over by the back door. And if we don't try and make it fair for new music producers and artists, then the art will suffer. Make no mistake. These are all the same old industry bods trying to get a stranglehold on the delivery system. The numbers don't even add up for Spotify yet. But it's not about that. It's about establishing the model, which will be extremely valuable."
We don’t know where he got his numbers from but then again we never heard of Atoms For Peace until today, either. It makes little sense as these streaming services introduce people to new music and potentially drive sales all the way around.
A recent statement on Twitter read “Anyway. Here's one. We're off of spotify.. Can't do that no more man.. Small meaningless rebellion.”
Indeed.
