The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is opening up for new domains including the .trust URL.
Those who want a .trust URL will need to submit to an initial security check and then frequent checks thereafter to make sure things are up to snuff.
Before this year, there were just 22 gTLDs, including the well-known .com, .org, and .net.
Rob Cotton, CEO of U.K.-based NCC, said in a statement: "The new rollout of gTLDs is further changing the shape of the Internet. Cybersquatting and phishing were big issues with just 22 gTLDs, but with over 1,400 set to be introduced these problems are set to get exponentially worse. The cost for businesses to protect its online presence and purchase all possible domain combinations will also be extortionate."
Anyone wanting a .trust URL must submit identity documentation and proof of intellectual property and naming rights before setting up shop. Once approved, NCC will perform daily malware scans and weekly assessments that test networks, Web apps, and email systems for compliance with the .trust technical policy.
Registrations for .trust URLs are expected to open at the end of the third quarter.
