Andrew Otto Boggs, 22, and Justin Gray Liverman, 24, were arrested as suspects in the hacking of emails of top American officials including CIA chief John Brennan. They were arrested Thursday in North Carolina.
Both are suspected of belonging to a group called "Crackas With Attitude." According to the Justice Department, the group is responsible for illegally accessing the personal data of the officials and their families between October 2015 and February 2016. They used the info to publishing it on public sites and harass their victims by telephone.
It is believed that three members of the group reside in Britain. Authorities in England arrested a 16-year-old student suspected of involvement.
Both CNN and Motherboard reported that the group targeted top CIA officials like Brennan, as well as senior figures in the FBI, the Homeland Security Department, the White House and other federal agencies.
In January, US director of national intelligence James Clapper said that he, too, had been the victim of cyber pirates. He reported that cyber pirates had gained access to the personal account he used for internet and telephone service.
