According to a survey conducted by researchers from the University of Kent found that two in five people falling victim to the Cryptolocker virus paid the £300 to recover their files.
The researchers surveyed 48 people who had been affected by CryptoLocker and found that of the 48, 17 said they paid the ransom and 31 said they did not.
The findings come from a [url=http://www.cybersec.kent.ac.uk/Survey2.pdf]survey[/url= or 1500 people who were asked eight questions regarding cybercrime and information security. What they found was that ransomware equates to about one in every 30 malware cases.
What was worrisome was that more than a quarter (28.2 per cent) of respondents did not use any anti-virus software, firewall or password management tools.
