Ukrainian Witness Says Russian APT group Fancy Bear Hacked the DNC

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 08/17/2017 10:20 PM [ comments Comments ]

There is now evidence that the Russian APT group Fancy Bear hacked the Democratic National Committee.

A Ukrainian man, who goes by the online handle of Profexer, turned himself in to Ukrainian authorities. He is the author of a piece of malware called the P.A.S. web shell that was being advertised on Russian-language dark web forums.

Profexer is the first living witness for the FBI into the hacking of the DNC. He was not arrested because authorities determined that he did not use the malware himself.

Although he wrote the malware, there is no evidence that he helped Fancy Bear hack the DNC nor did he know that his software was being used for that purpose. However, he did acknowledge knowing the actors by their online aliases.
