Virginia State Police Network Attacked

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 04/28/2017 10:59 AM [ comments Comments ]

The Virginia State Police network was the victim of a hacker who shut down their systems email service.

The attack also stopped the department from updating their Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Children Registry website. The attack affected the systems from 8 p.m. Wednesday and until noon Thursday.

State police spokeswoman Corinne N. Geller said they are working with the Virginia Information Technologies Agency and Northrup Grumman in an effort to identify the attacker and contain and eradicate the malware.

Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel W. Steven Flaherty said: “We recognize the vital role email plays in regards to communicating with State Police, and appreciate the public's patience and understanding as we diligently work to resolve this matter. While during this period we are required to communicate with the public through alternative means, our level of service should not otherwise be affected.”
