Vishing Operation Busted in India

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 10/07/2016 10:10 AM [ comments Comments ]

In what is being called a vishing operation, Mumbai police have captured a gang that could have made off with $7.5 million from U.S. victims who thought they were calling from the IRS.

Acting on a tip from a disgruntled employee, police arrested 700 people from a call center in the city of Thane, India where they seized hundreds of servers, hard disks, laptops and other equipment as well as documentation of the scams.

It is thought that operatives in the U.S. supplied personal data of the victims to the scammers via the dark web. Callers were coached in speaking with a U.S. accent and supplied with a six page script to try to convince the victim that they owed back taxes or fines. Payment was to be made via pre-paid cash cards.

The scam is nothing new. The U.K. was subject to the same scam in 2014 and victims lost an estimated £24 million, according to Financial Fraud Action U.K. figures.

Authorities in the U.S. are seeking culprits as their counterparts in India are continuing the investigation, believing that the scam may have also involved victims in the U.K. and Australia.

According to Get Safe Online, it was considered the most popular cyber scam in 2015.
