According to security researchers, a new form of malware replaces your Chrome browser with a look-a-like.
The “eFast Browser” works by installing and running itself in place of Chrome. Based on Chromes open source, the look-a-like functions much like the real Chrome browser except for malicious activity.
It makes itself the default browser and takes over associations such as HTML, JPG, PDF, and GIF, according to MalwareBytes.
During use, it displays pop up messages and search ads. Some of them lead to ecommerce sites, while others redirect to potentially malicious webpages. That makes it possible to lead to additional malware. PCRisk also warns that the browser collects browsing information that could be personally identifiable. (The company behind eFast Browser, Clara Labs, has its own privacy policy, though trying to load this page in Chrome brings up a malware warning.)
It installs through other software. It’s just another Potentially Unwanted Program that sneaks itself into software installers. PCRisk has detailed removal instructions.
Attackers are trying to over-write the entire Chrome open source software.
