Webroot's security tools are bricking key Microsoft Windows system files.
The snafu compromised people's individual copies, business editions and installations run by managed service providers (MSPs). Between 1200 and 1500 MST, Webroot started determining that Windows operating system data was labeled W32.Trojan.Gen and started moving them into quarantine.
Fortunately, not all Windows files were quarantined and a reboot and restore of the quarantined files is able to return the files to their proper place.
"We understand that this is a consumer and business issue," a Webroot rep confessed in a on its support forums. "We understand that MSPs will require a different solution. We are currently working on this universal solution now."
Webroot support forum is seeing a flood of upset users and IT professionals who are reporting thousands of endpoints going nuts.
All versions of Windows were affected and Webroot says it is working on a universal fix for the software.
