What FREE anti-virus program should I use?

One of the most often asked question on Majorgeeks is ‘what anti-virus program should I use?’ The answer is simpler then you might think.

There are a lot of free choices and the simple fact of the matter is, they are all excellent so it’s hard to go wrong.

Panda Cloud Antivirus is the one I currently use. It’s quiet and uses little memory.

An easy way to choose, and remember a good anti-virus program is to remember "the three A’s”. There are three very popular, excellent anti-virus programs and you can’t go wrong with any of them; Avast, Avira and AVG. They have all been around a long time and if you like them; they all offer a pro version with more protection.

Avast! Free Edition is very popular although for me, it has too many false positives. Still an excellent choice.

Avira Free Antivirus is a solid, easy to use choice.

AVG AntiVirus Free Edition has the advantage of being a well-known brand although over the past few years I haven’t cared as much for it.

Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows used to have the disadvantage of being slow but they fixed that. It’s from Microsoft and so is your operating system so another good choice.

So, what’s the answer? The answer is the least geekiest things you will read here on Majorgeeks – ever. Pick the one you like the looks of from this list. Ta-da! They are all excellent, free and easy to use. There is no wrong choice. You have to make a decision so jump in!

That said, if it turns out that you hate it, simply use IOBit Uninstaller and make sure you choose the powerful scan when you are finished uninstalling it and try another anti-virus program.

Let us know in the comments what your favorite is and why!
