What Does Kari Byron's New Year and MajorGeeks have in common?

Answer: Air Cannons!
Let me explain.
During the holiday week, Discovery channel has been running Mythbusters episodes 24/7 which 1) was an awesome way to avoid much of the other programming aired in the holiday week and 2) got me all riled up again about Discovery firing Kari, Troy and Grant.
That got me checking out what the three were up to. I found this video of Kari Byron making a niffy little air powered New Year's Party Cannon.
The funny thing about that is we, The MajorGeeks Corps, (Tim, Kodo, Iceman, Wenchie and Jim) made pretty much the same thing 10 years ago to fire water 'balloons of pain' for charity. To make a long story short; a member of our forums family needed help and Kodo (OG Mod) came up with the idea to sponsor him eating slices of pizza and getting hit with water balloons. I believe it was something like $1 per slice and $5 per balloon. The event was aptly named,Bash Kodo.
No one is going to donate $5 for a simple water balloon, right? So we had to ramp it up. Really, there was one choice - air canon! We used 90 lbs of pressure and added water to the cannon to help create some back pressure. After some trial and error we got the water cannon working... almost too well. We took out the neighbors porch screens (1:22), bruised Kodo in places that will be left unnamed (1:59) and, embarrassingly, dropped me like a bad habit (3:20) on January 1.
I scoured my backup drives and found the video compilation of the event that we all thought was lost.
The video quality is pretty horrible by today's standards but we figured we'd post it anyway to share the retro-laugh. There's a couple choice words in this one - as you may expect - so it may not be safe to play at work or around kids.
