Reports have been circulating regarding an alleged new version of the popular WhatsApp messaging service, this release which is called WhatsApp Plus - apparently is not legit and may allow the modified app to "communicate with illegitimate sources."
In short, according to TechShout, the application is a modified apk (Android app) file where someone has tinkered with the software to enable new capabilities. There’s also a dedicated website that details the exclusive features which includes the ability to change the UI colors and fonts as well as other visual elements. It’ll also let you send larger files and give you the ability to apply downloadable themes.
BGR did a little digging around and found that the Whois information of the alleged website reveals that the domain wasn't registered by WhatsApp, Inc. They also decompiled the WhatsApp Plus APK file — which has been circulating around the web — and claim to have found links to shady websites, hinting that the app may be communicating with illegitimate sources.
We will advise readers to not download this app, or any app which claims to be associated with WhatsApp. WhatsApp hasn't launched any such app, and by using alternatives, you’re putting your privacy and security at risk.
If you have downloaded the WhatsApp Plus version thinking it was affiliated with, or actually WhatsApp, we recommend that you immediately uninstall it. You may be opening yourself up to a potential privacy invasion - or worse.
I am sure that Facebook, Inc. will eventually have something to say about the use of the WhatsApp trademark.
You will find the authentic WhatsApp available from us here at MajorGeeks via Google Play.
