Whatsapp Scam Trying to Solicit Money

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 07/18/2017 10:45 AM [ comments Comments ]

Do you do Whatsapp? If so, then beware that there is a phishing email that is going around trying to get your money.

ESET researchers have reported about a scheme that is purportedly from Whatapp that indicates the users free subscription is over and they must pay to continue service.

“Our records indicate that your WhatsApp trial service is exceeding the one year [sic] period. At the completion of your trial period your WhatsApp will no longer be able to send or receive message. To continue using WhatsApp without interruption, we need you to subscribe for any of our subscription periods.”

For any users who have used the service since 2016, they might remember that it was a paid for service and might be duped into believing the email. However, it did announce that the service did become a completely free service since then.

The scam is also being sent via text messages saying that the customer needs to verify their information and they can obtain a lifetime subscription for $1.30.
