Winamp to cease llama-whipping on December 20th

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on 11/20/2013 05:12 PM [ comments Comments ]

With very little fanfare, Winamp has announced it will shut down on December 20th.

As seen on the website:

Winamp.com and associated Web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.

Geno Yoham, Winamp’s general director since October 2008 essentially blamed AOL, who purchased it in 1999 for 80 million.

We love the program ourselves but admit it just lost its way over the years while file sharing (and streaming) websites and iTunes essentially ran right past it. But, we will still miss it.

ARS reports that Doug Serton, an AOL spokesperson, said: "We decline to comment beyond the note posted on the site earlier."

We don't expect to hear much else on this, beyond what you read. "It's AOL's fault" and "no comment" but we know there will be more on this.
