Wisecase Finds Over 15,000 Security Webcams Exposed Online

Posted by: Corporal Punishment on 12/27/2023 11:20 AM [ comments Comments ]

Webcam security is a serious issue that potentially affects millions of users around the world. Typically, your PC/Phone camera would be hacked with some sort of trojan, but PC's and phones can be mitigated with a piece of tape and some awareness.

However, the new "smart" cameras offer a whole new set of vulnerabilities that offer cybercriminals the opportunity for profit. For example, for a telegram group with you can buy access to bedroom webcams around the world for like 6 bucks. Or better is when guys like at Scammer PayBack hack the webcams of fake call centers .... (Go get 'em Boys!!)

A recent study by WizCase revealed that more than 15,000 webcams are easily exposed online, allowing anyone to access them with just the IP address and sometimes without a password. DAMN! These webcams include baby monitors, security cameras, pet cams, and even traffic cameras. Some of the webcams stream live video and audio, while others only capture snapshots. The researchers found webcams from 256 countries, with China, the US, and Japan being the most affected.

The top Models to be concerned with are
- AXIS net cameras
- Cisco Linksys webcam
- IP Camera Logo Server
- IP WebCam
- IQ Invision web camera
- Mega-Pixel IP Camera
- Mobotix
- WebCamXP 5
- Yawcam

The main reason for this vulnerability is the use of default or weak passwords by the webcam owners or manufacturers. Many users do not change the default settings of their devices, leaving them open to hackers or curious bystanders. Moreover, some webcams use outdated protocols or software that can be easily exploited by malicious actors. The consequences of webcam hacking can range from privacy invasion and blackmail to identity theft and cyberattacks.

To protect yourself from webcam hacking, WizCase recommends following some simple steps:

- Change the default password of your webcam and use a strong and unique one.
- Update the firmware and software of your webcam regularly.
- Disable remote access to your webcam if you do not need it.
- Use a firewall and antivirus software to prevent malware infections.
- Cover your webcam when not in use or unplug it if possible.
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments that may contain webcam hacking tools.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the benefits of your webcam without compromising your security and privacy.
