Wishbone App Breached; 2.2 Million Teens at Risk

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 03/16/2017 11:06 AM [ comments Comments ]

If you have a teen who uses the Wishbone app, be aware that the social networking app has been breached and 2.2 million email addresses and some 287,000 cellphone numbers have been stolen.

The app is used primarily by teens with preponderance under 18. Wishbone is in the top 10 social apps used by iPhone users in the U.S. One of the founders has said that the app is geared towards teenagers and young adults, mostly female.

The data base was found by Troy Hunt who is a researcher with breach notification website Have I Been Pwned? What he found was 2,326,452 full names, 2,247,314 email addresses, 287,502 cellphone numbers, as well as birthdates and user's gender.

The tech incubator behind the app, Science Inc, confirmed there's been a data breach. In a statement, they claim hackers may have had access to an API without authorization. The flaw has been patched, though after the horse has left the barn.

If you think your child may have been exposed, you can check for their email address at Have I Been Pwned?
