Working around the Google Chrome "This type of file can harm your computer" problem

In this day and age, computer security can often stop you from doing what you want. More often than not, I have gotten the "This type of file can harm your computer" error from Google Chrome when downloading software I know is safe and MajorGeeks approved. Often times, as far as I can tell, anything with third party software can be flagged. The downside is you can’t get a file you know you want and Chrome even leaves a file behind.
The error looks like this at the bottom of your browser by default:
It's easy to get around this in a few clicks in Google Chrome's settings.
Click the 3 gray bars in the top right corner and select settings.
Scroll down and click on advanced settings.
Under the privacy tab, uncheck "Enable phishing and malware protection".
Close the settings tab and go to your download.
This is what the settings page looks like:
With this setting Google Chrome will still warn you but will now give you the option to keep or discard the file:
Repeat this and check "Enable phishing and malware protection" to restore that protection when done.
Don't forget to check for any .crdownload files in your download folder as well, as seen in the first screenshot. Those are incomplete Chrome downloads and can be deleted.
