Yahoo users are being advised to change their passwords as their data has been put up for sale on TheRealDeal Dark Web marketplace.
The data dump is being sold by the infamous Peace_of_Mind (Peace) who also sold and published hacks on LinkedIn, MySpace, Tumblr, Fling.com, and VK.com. It is estimated that in all, Peace has sold over 800 million users.
Peace says the data is old, approximately from 2012, the same year that Marissa Mayer was named Yahoo's CEO. However, since Verizon acquired Yahoo last week, no one knows what will become of the company so users are advised to change their passwords.
The data dump includes details such as usernames, MD5-hashed passwords, and dates of birth for all users. Since MD5 hashed passwords are easily cracked, they are almost as easy as plain text data.
Yahoo, who has not yet acknowledged the hack, had this to say:
"We are aware of a claim. We are committed to protecting the security of our users’ information and we take any such claim very seriously. Our security team is working to determine the facts. Yahoo works hard to keep our users safe, and we always encourage our users to create strong passwords, or give up passwords altogether by using Yahoo Account Key, and use different passwords for different platforms."
