Karim Baratov, 22, an immigrant from Kazakhstan, was denied bail by a Canadian court for his part in the hacking of Yahoo.
Baratov is awaiting extradition to the U.S. to face charges of hacking, commercial espionage and related crimes. Prosecutors argued that Baratov is a flight risk as he has ties to foreign spies and his co-conspirator had already fled to Russia.
Baratov's lawyers plan to fight the extradition, which will be heard in June, and they expect the proceeding to last three years.
In their complaint, U.S. authorities argue that Baratov was hired by Russian intelligence agents to carry out the attacks against Yahoo, which lasted from 2014 to 2016.
The data breach was the largest cyberattacks in history and compromised 500 million users. Targets included Russian and US government officials, cyber security, diplomatic and military personnel, journalists, companies and financial firms.
Baratov's lawyers asked the court to remand him to his parents custody, but the court denied the request.
